Successful installation in French Guiana for the P66 tidal turbine

Rapid and efficient deployment of the hybrid system

During the first week of December, three members of the Guinard Energies technical team traveled to French Guiana as part of the Hydroriv project led by CNRS Guyane.

This project consists of deploying and testing during 2 years a floating river turbine technology coupled with photovoltaic installation and batteries storage to provide electricity to Nouragues scientific research CNRS center.

For this project, the CNRS has selected the floating version of the Poseide 66 (3.5 kW) turbine in order to carry out the in situ test of the coupling of a river tidal turbine with its solar installation on the Nouragues protected scientific research site.

Arriving on site on December 2, the Guinard Energies team carried out the complete installation of the hybrid system in collaboration with AES company (Amazonie Energie Solution) based at Kourou in charge of photovoltaic and batteries storage installation.

In close collaboration with the CNRS team, the solution of aerial mooring system have been selected by Guinard Energies team. This reliable and simple implementation solution offers the advantage of rapid and safe deployment. Moreover, the introduction of a back-and-forth allows to store the floating turbine close to the riverbank during floods or follow-up operations.

The turbine connection to the aerial mooring system and its immersion in the heart of the water stream was carried out on December 3, in less than 24 hours.

Developed by the internal design office, the river mono-float installed in French Guiana is fitted with an aluminum frontal protection designed to deflect the potential river debris. Cables stretched on each sides of the turbine entry also allow to deflect small debris

These simple and robust devices thus make it possible to reduce the maintenance of the river turbine throughout the year.

Combined with its C66 converter, hydro-kinetic power production is mixed with that of the new photovoltaic installation realized by the Guyanese company AES.Associated with a batteries storage, this new hydro-electric and solar hybrid installation will thus allow the Nouragues scientific station to reduce its expenses on diesel fuel, which has been used until now by using a generator set.

This mini grid will be monitored by the G2Elab, French laboratory, in charge of measuring the contribution of hydro-kinetic technology in the electrical mix of this isolated site.

This new realization of Guinard Energies in non-interconnected area (ZNI) confirms the know-how of a team and the relevance of MegaWattblue technology already proven in previous deployments of P66 and P154 turbines.

With a river hydro-kinetic potential partly identified, Guyana is a territory with many facilities in isolated sites, just waiting to spend on renewable technologies such as solar and mini-hydro. The Guinard Energies teams are therefore working on future projects in this region.

The video of the installation will be online soon here.
